If you have a Luxmed package through your employer, you likely have free global travel insurance. But here is the catch: it is almost certainly NOT active yet.
I recently found out that even though my company pays for this “Premium” benefit, I wasn’t actually covered because I hadn’t signed a single piece of paper. Here is everything you need to know to activate yours before your next trip.
⚠️ Pro Tip: When I asked my employer, they asked me to contact Luxmed directly as my employer doesn’t have provision to accept the application or activate the travel insurance via Luxmed.
Why is it not automatic?
The insurance is usually provided by Allianz Travel (partnering with Luxmed). Because it involves your private health data, the law requires you to “opt-in” voluntarily. If you haven’t filled out the Declaration of Accession (Deklaracja Przystąpienia), you have zero coverage.
🛠️ How to Activate It (Step-by-Step)
Don’t wait until the day you travel! It takes a few weeks to process.
- Check Your Package: Log into your Luxmed app. If you see terms like “Complex,” “Premium,” or “Star,” you likely have this benefit.
- The Online Portal: The fastest way is via the Allianz-Luxmed portal: www.turystyka.allianz.pl/luxmed.
- Enter Your Data: You will need your PESEL and your Luxmed Patient Card Number.
- Register Family: If your spouse or kids are on your Luxmed plan, you must fill out a separate declaration for each person.
⚠️ The “24th Day” Rule: > If you activate by the 24th of the month, your insurance starts on the 1st of the next month. If you miss that window, it won’t start for nearly six weeks!
Contact Luxmed Customer Care and follow thier instructions if you have any questions.
🏥 Luxmed Insurance vs. EKUZ: Why You Need Both
In my previous post about the EKUZ card, I explained how the free state card works. While EKUZ is your “base,” Luxmed/Allianz is your “upgrade.”
| Feature | EKUZ (NFZ) | Luxmed (Allianz) |
| Where it works | Europe Only | Worldwide |
| Hospitals | Public Only | Public & Private |
| Medical Flight Home | Usually No | Yes (up to €20,000+) |
| Mountain Rescue | Usually No | Yes (Helicopters included) |
| Cost | Free | Included in your job benefit |
🚨 What to do in an Emergency?
Once activated, download your Insurance Certificate. It has a 24/7 hotline. If something happens abroad:
- Call the hotline before going to a clinic if possible.
- They will direct you to the nearest private facility they partner with.
- They often pay the bill directly so you don’t have to use your own cash.
Is it one time activation?
The answer is: It is generally a one-time activation, but with some important conditions that depend on your employment status.
One-Time Activation (The Good News)
Once you have submitted your “Declaration of Accession” (Deklaracja przystąpienia) through the Allianz-Luxmed portal, you are typically covered for as long as your company continues to pay for your Luxmed package. You do not need to log in and renew it every year or before every trip.
When does it expire?
The insurance is tied directly to your Luxmed contract. It will automatically expire if:
- You change jobs: Even if your new employer also uses Luxmed, you must re-activate the insurance for the new policy. It does not “follow” you to a new company.
- Your employer changes packages: If your company decides to downgrade the Luxmed plan to a version that doesn’t include travel insurance, your coverage will stop.
- You lose your Luxmed rights: For example, if you move from a permanent contract to a B2B contract that doesn’t include the same benefits.
The “Insurance Year” Limit
While you don’t need to manually renew the activation, there are annual limits on the money you can claim:
- Medical Costs: Usually reset every “Insurance Year” (not necessarily the calendar year, but the anniversary of your company’s contract with Luxmed).
- Trip Length: The “one-time activation” covers unlimited trips, but each individual trip usually cannot exceed 180 days.
Pro-Tip: The “Certificate Check”
Even though you don’t need to renew the activation, it is highly recommended to download a new Insurance Certificate once a year.
- The certificate contains the policy number and the emergency phone number.
- Sometimes policy numbers change when the employer renews the group contract. Having the most recent PDF on your phone ensures that if you call the emergency hotline from abroad, they can find you in the system immediately.
Final Verdict
The EKUZ card is your “must-have” for Europe, but your Luxmed travel insurance is what gives you “VIP” protection globally. Log in today and activate it—it costs you nothing extra, but it could save you a fortune.
